Respected friends of ours:

 

Two brothers of ours and I have just returned from Spain. The purpose of our journey was to collect equipment. That is, devices for geological study, documentation, typewriters and samples of handicrafts. We have not been able to stay longer for security reasons. There still remains there one brother of ours, who is waiting to travel to a South American country. That is all we can tell you about our recent stay in Spain.

 

Forgive our earlier letters for having some typing errors. We will try to ensure this does not happen, for we now have a machine built in your country, and we also count on a cordial Earth collaborator born in Latin America.

 

We have sufficient references about the meeting held by you Spaniards in Barcelona. We confess to you that we feared you might go too far in adopting a eulogistic stance which, though understandable, would have harmed the course of contacts with you. That was not so, according to the data in our possession. The level of balanced objectivity has comforted us intensely. We would not wish to hurt the other organisers, but we would like to point out that special congratulations are deserved by your brother Farriols Calvo, Rafael and Nordlin Franz, Hiltrud.

 

Thank you, friends of ours, for that impartiality you have shown. As we have always repeated to you, you must see in us a doubtful group, invested with a purely anecdotal value, and in no way compromise your prestige by defending our suitability. We also beg you to try to excuse the interval of silence. We needed that precautionary period until we were sure that the consequences of that meeting were harmless.

 

We will soon resume the sending of some reports in the course of being set out, addressed to your brothers Mr Domínguez, Juan and Farriols, Rafael. We foresee some addressed to Messrs Gil, Antonio; Martínez, Joaquín and other brothers of yours.

 

We may be able to provide you with some interesting report if one of your brothers could travel to London. For we already know that these letters are almost all intercepted when we send them through the international postal channel. If one of your brothers were to travel around the dates of 26 September to 8 October, we would hand him some report without risk of interception (by post, within London); we could also do so if he goes to Stockholm or Malmö between 21 September and 23 October.

 

The message we will hand him should be kept until the twentieth of January 1974 and, if we have not returned to Earth, opened and made known to the interested brothers.

 

All my brothers will leave Earth in the interval 29 October to 15 November. The probability of return is 65.14 per cent.

 

This document has already been handed to a brother of Australian nationality and a brother of Canadian nationality. We also wish to hand it to a brother of Spanish nationality and a brother of Indian nationality.

 

If any of the members of your Eridani group were to travel, he should write to

Inside the envelope, which will bear no sender's address, or a false one, a sheet of paper will be placed, specifying the name of your brother who is travelling for this purpose. The capital he will travel to (London, Stockholm, Malmö) and the dates of his stay. Without stating in writing his place of residence.

 

He will also give a key figure which we will provide within six days to your brother Dionisio Garrido or to your brother Jorge Barrenechea.
